This is a prime example of why it is a good idea to listen to a band's debut album first. Kara Ihlas holds 40 minutes of not particularly innovative but nonetheless good, galopping black metal - but compared to the cascading, mind-numbing and furious brutality of its successors, it falls short. The good thing is: an artist should always be measured by his own art, and in the case of Kerem Yilmaz, the progression in his songwriting skill is undeniable and downright soaring.
